First Encounter at a Stadium

Lois Broad remembers watching high-school football at the stadium where Dufferin Mall now stands — and one unforgettable game in 1941.

When High Park resident Lois Broad met her husband-to-be in the early 1940s, she was just 14 years old and he was 15. Her first encounter with Charlie was at a school football game at a stadium that used to be on the site of Dufferin Mall. Next came a sock hop and then her first date with what was a memorably embarrassing moment – all because of an Artie Shaw song. Only a 14-year-old could have been so devastated!!

Lois, who was born in 1927, has shared many wonderful stories with us. She grew up on High Park Ave. in Toronto’s west end and attended Humberside Collegiate, where her father had been a teacher.
