Pet Chickens and My Vegetarian Sister

Lois Broad tells the story of her sister Freda, who became a lifelong vegetarian on the day her brother Douglas pointed out that all the meat on the table had once been alive.

When the Johnston family lived at 292 Evelyn Ave., their daughter Freda used to walk the backyard chickens on a leash and, naturally, refused to eat them when they ended up on the dining room table. When her brother Douglas reminded her that other meat on the table came from animals that were killed, she became a vegetarian on the spot for the rest of her life. Her youngest sister, Lois Broad, born in 1927, tells the story of her unusual sibling.
