In the 1950s and ’60s, many German immigrants settled around Roncesvalles Avenue, creating a neighbourhood where German-language films played at the Revue Cinema and specialty food shops served the growing community.
Today, one of the last remaining reminders of that era is The Old Country Shop, long operated by sisters Karin Smith and Helga Schuliakewich. Following their deaths — Karin in 2019 and Helga in 2024 — Karin’s daughter, Sabine Smith, has stepped in to continue the family business.
Students from Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School made this short documentary in partnership with Back Lane Studios.
