The Old Country Shop

Students working with Back Lane Studios explore the history of German immigration around Roncesvalles Avenue through the story of The Old Country Shop, a legendary destination on the Roncesvalles retail strip.

In the 1950s and ’60s, many German immigrants settled around Roncesvalles Avenue, creating a neighbourhood where German-language films played at the Revue Cinema and specialty food shops served the growing community.

Today, one of the last remaining reminders of that era is The Old Country Shop, long operated by sisters Karin Smith and Helga Schuliakewich. Following their deaths — Karin in 2019 and Helga in 2024 — Karin’s daughter, Sabine Smith, has stepped in to continue the family business.

The Old Country Shop is a reminder of the German community that settled around Roncesvalles Ave. in the '50s and '60s.
