Many people in the neighbourhood worked for the meat packers or stockyards; everyone lived with the smell; and kids were given a different kind of street-proofing lesson. The concern was not what they should do when they encountered a two-legged stranger, but rather how they should act when a four-legged creature with horns wandered into their schoolyard. Kids in the neighbourhood also learned early on about the not-so-pretty realities of food production, but they just took it in stride.
