Sweet Success at Laura Secord

Judith Scolnik tells the remarkable story of her grandfather Harry Goldman, who in the 1920s was hired by Laura Secord, the popular chocolate maker.

Hired in the 1920s by Laura Secord, the popular chocolate maker, Harry Goldman worked at the company’s “studio” at 60 Bathurst St. for decades. He created some recipes for new products and was an expert at quality control because of his discerning palate. What makes this story so unusual is that Laura Secord was owned by an Irish Catholic, and the company as a rule hired only other Irish Catholics. But they made an exception for Harry Goldman, who was Jewish! The interview was recorded by Joshua Dargie; the video was edited by Greg Ingham. Thanks to Joshua and Greg, and to Judith for sharing memories of her grandfather.
